Places like Broadway, Fifth Avenue, and Main Street are often considered commercial centers in the United States. In today’s automobile age, roadways are increasingly serving the same function via billboards. This spread of the marketplace from the town center to the highway billboard has altered the way we experience very basic things including nature, community, and architecture.
As I travel by car, my eyes are drawn to the billboards that line our nation’s roadways. The messages they convey are usually of little significance to me. What I find so alluring, however, is how the billboards change the landscape. This is particularly true at night when the billboards glow with ambient light that I call “found light.” I use this found light to create haunting and beautiful images that present a new viewpoint of a familiar environment. This new perspective mitigates the objective of outdoor advertising while expanding on the natural beauty of the roadside landscape.
