Annually I am caught off guard by winter’s effect on the natural world and, ultimately, my psyche. However, I never experienced a winter as severe as the one I encountered during my first year of living in Michigan. The warmth and richness of autumn’s colors succumbed to sheets of cold, white snow and ice. This striking transformation of the landscape reflected an equally dramatic shift in my mood.
To counter an overwhelming feeling of depression, I engaged in my own version of phototherapy. I entered the winter landscape, and I made photographs. A book entitled Dear Cranbrook and a chair made of ice also stemmed from this experience.
What will the winter of 2005-2006 help me create?
